In North Bay Village, a Couple With a Drone and Police Officers Rescued a Tangled Dolphin
The couple noticed from their balcony that a rope was keeping a dolphin from surfacing, called 911 and used a drone to show police where it was. The dolphin was freed and is alive.
And now, some good news!
In North Bay Village, Ahmed Raul Perez Prieto and his wife, Natalie, saw from their balcony that a dolphin in the water just couldn’t swim normally. Ahmed works with drones — he flew one up and got a closer look: a dark fishing line or rope had wrapped around the dolphin, and it was struggling to rise to the surface to breathe.
The couple called 911, and while police were on their way, they used the drone to show where the dolphin was. North Bay Village officers waded into the water and untangled the rope and line from its tail. The dolphin was freed, and it’s alive.
My advice: if you fish, don’t leave old line or nets in the water — for marine animals, they’re a trap. And if you see an animal in trouble, call 911.
