The US Raises Its Kenya Travel Advisory to Level 3 Over Ebola
The State Department advises reconsidering nonessential travel to Kenya: a higher risk of Ebola and limited medical care.
Important news if you’re planning a safari or a trip to Africa.
On Monday, October 19, the US State Department raised its advisory for Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3 — “Reconsider Travel.” The reasons:
- a higher risk of Ebola infection, with limited medical care — especially outside the big cities; hospitals often require payment up front;
- protests and strikes that can turn violent, most often in Nairobi and the west of the country;
- travel to several counties in the northeast and along the coast north of Malindi is off-limits entirely because of the risk of kidnapping and terrorism.
My advice: if your trip is already booked, check the current advisory at travel.state.gov, get insurance that covers medical evacuation and enroll in the STEP program.
