Florida Driver’s License Data Breach: The State Is Mailing Letters and Offering Free Protection
Hackers got into Florida’s driver’s license and vehicle database. Those affected are being offered a year of free credit monitoring.
If you have a Florida driver’s license or ID, please read this.
On September 4, 2026, hackers used a stolen username and password to get into the database of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). The database holds driver’s license and vehicle records, including images of documents. The state says access has been shut down and there are no signs so far that the data has been misused.
What the state is doing:
- mailing letters to people whose data may have been affected;
- offering a year of free credit and identity monitoring (Sontiq, a TransUnion company) plus $1 million in identity theft insurance.
My advice: sign up only by following the instructions in the official letter. If someone calls you “from FLHSMV” or “from TransUnion” and asks for your SSN or license number, it’s a scam. Had a Florida license but never got a letter? Email [email protected].
