The DV-2027 Green Card Lottery Is on Hold Again: An Appeals Court Blocked the Order to Open It
The Ninth Circuit ruled that the State Department doesn’t have to open DV-2027 registration for now. There’s no official opening date.
The next chapter in the green card lottery story — important if you’re waiting on DV-2027.
Earlier, federal judge Jinsook Ohta ordered the State Department to open lottery registration by November 1. But the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (in a 3–0 decision) blocked that order.
What you need to know: - the court ruled that Red Eagle Law, the immigration law firm that filed the lawsuit, didn’t have standing to sue; - it’s a procedural ruling: the court didn’t weigh in on whether the State Department’s pause is lawful, and it wrote that it does “not endorse” the fact that registration hasn’t opened; - the lottery grants about 55,000 visas each year.
My advice: DV registration is free and takes place only on the official website, dvprogram.state.gov. Don’t pay middlemen who promise to “sign you up” right now.
Rules and deadlines may change — always check the official source.
